Tagore's Nobel Peace Prize

In 1913 Rabinranath Tagore became the first non-European to be giving the Nobel Peace Prize for his literary accomplishments from Gitanjali.  A book of poetry including over 100 writings re-published. Wining the prize opened up more doors for Tagore and eventually gave him the financial ability to start his own university.  Also in 1915 Tagore was knighted by the British Government.  He would soon decline the honor as a protest against British policies in India.  View Tagore's Nobel Peace prize and others from 1913.  Nobel Peace Prize



Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan is where Rabindranath's father first found the piece of land.  He found it to be peaceful where he could settle and practice his meditation.  Later on this is where Tagore started the school of Shantiniketa in 1901.  While today it has become a major tourist attraction having gift shops.  Also well known for its academic purposes for the area.   Here are a few links on the history of Shatiniketan.

Family Tree of Tagore Family

One of Tagore's most famous books Gitanjali

Gitanjali published in 1912 was the book that Tagore won the Nobel Peace Prize one year later for.  It is by far his most popular and well known book.   It was a collection of over 100 inspirational poems that was translated from one of his earlier writings Bengali. Abanindranath Tagore


Rabindranth Tagore's nephew Abanindranath Tagore would become the founder of the Bengal School of art contemporary art from the school of Bengal.  Where he would continue the legacy of talented painters in the Tagore family.   Which became influential art paintings of the Indian style from the Bengal region.  Contemporary art of Bengal's best names
